What is a class like?

We work with bare feet, in simple clothes such as leggings and T shirt.
You tell the teacher if you have injuries or basic physical problems, past or present.

We begin by sitting quietly for a minute or two.
In the first weeks the basic shape of the 'first level' postures is learned. The most basic posture is standing up straight with the feet together (tadasana, the pose of the mountain).
Standing and sitting postures are repeated different weeks with adjustments, aids, variations in emphasis
and specific help for individual limitations and problems.

Gradually, improvements come and the postures can be maintained for longer.
New postures are introduced and practiced.
At the end of the class we lie down and relax completely for several minutes with eyes closed.
Feelings of improved wellbeing come remarkably rapidly.

Eventually, with more familiarity, greater control comes, bringing a sense of balance, integration and awareness.
The effects are felt of different postures on the different bodily systems.

You can get books (the basic text is Light on Yoga by BKS Iyengar), but you do need the help of a teacher.

There are many classes in the Manchester area to suit your location and availability.
